Kittiwake 04:01
LYRICS Kittiwake I heard a voice on the radio It sounded like a friend I had not long ago – she's in the radiators, in the walls around, she's in the soles I walk on, yeah she's in the ground. Under foot, feet under and my eyes still owe her, I can't repay her - there's no hand to hold. She filled her action up with meaning, when you're feeling nothing it's good to see - 'cause when I'm seeing nothing I'm feeling something just as cold and empty as the space she leaves. It's not the fact she left me it's that she goes on into the place where ears don't hear the song. Did she hide her illness from the flock, or crowd? Avoid the predators who've come to pick her out? You can't recover, you can't recover... I picked her up and tried to put her down into a place where noise was the safer sound, tried to name the problem, find another option from the constant flying head to the ground.

LYRICS Leaving's Too Easy Longing, is losing and I've lost too long. I said longing, is losing, and I've lost too long. I've lost too long. Ill for ages, then find a cure for, then find a cure for me. Leaving's too easy, and I've left it too long I said now leaving's too easy, and I've left it too long. See me coming – you'd shoot the liar for me, you'd shoot the liar for me. Loving's too costly, and I've paid my way Loving's too costly, and I've paid my way, I've paid my way…

Amy 03:11
LYRICS: Oh why didn't you read the book of numbers? - you could've been before a priest with your offering. And if you drank that bitter water he had it wouldn't taste like you'd been had, unless your belly swelled away. And then the product of your guilt might be a girl. You and your lie could hide a while inside a girl. Oh why didn't you look? - the book of spells you could've cooked - a tub of gin and a dirty look. And if you drank that holy water he had it wouldn't taste like you'd been bad - you'd be in, you'd be forgiven. And to lose the man was half the plan for you. To lose your way and not look back so you could find yourself along the track without the girl inside the heart attack of you. And then the girl you lose you lose with, with all the will to keep her there with, with all the will to keep her there with you. Oh why didn't you hear? – the book could've saved you all those years – saved your soul and a scar-less body. If you'd not drank that bit of wine that he had, it wouldn't be half as bad - you'd have a cave instead of a vex. And to lose the man was half the plan for you. To lose your way and not look back so you could find yourself along the track without the girl inside the heart attack of you.

1980 04:09
LYRICS: 1980 Cast your aspersions down on me, down on me, down on me - You think you're winning but you're only taking part. And your brain is caving in – It fragments as you give in to the past that underpins the decay of everything. Hold your frailty 1980 Hold your frailty, Hold it up to me, 1980 And the days come rolling in, And the years go rolling out And you'll say through all your letters, and you'll say to all your betters, and you'll say, and you'll say, and you'll say, and you'll say, I was there – I was. I was there – I was. I was there, I was there, I was there – I was. And the days come rolling in, And the years go rolling out Hold your frailty 1980 Hold your frailty, Hold it up to me, 1980

LYRICS: One Day These Legs Won't Dance Wasted a night, yeah we wasted a night 'cause they dance with sticks in here – it's like a hall of mirrors and I see myself and I don't want to see myself in ten years. And I can't be civil, not knowing what I know – bitter youth in my brain but none on show, one day these legs won't… Let me stay, let me stay like I am, like I am - Don't take away the only one I am Let me go, let me go back to me, back to me - don't make me carry this fragility. I can't see it through, and nor can you. Should it be so bizarre that we head for the bar and order ten more beers? It's a sobering sight to see the floor alight with a sea of sickly olden half-cheers. And I can't be civil, not knowing what I know – bitter youth in my brain but none on show, one day these legs won't… You've got one eye on the door, You've got one eye on the time, You've got one eye on the door, You've got one eye on the time. Took two a night, yeah it took two a night, to teach us something new. What a lesson well-learned to see the tables turn on a bunch of eager, half-cut sub-youths. And I can't be civil, not knowing what I know – bitter youth in my brain but none on show, one day these legs won't dance…

LYRICS: Diane's Pool Hall Down, down, down in Diane's Pool Hall, I found my money in fooling them all – I fooled them with moves and I fooled them with glances and all the fools danced their pool-hall dances. Strut round the table; pot the red through the yellow; hit the black in a hat-trick when I'm good and able. Down in Diane's Pool Hall the shady keep their shades on, the girls keep their socks on, the sons of guns with tired arms keep their eyes on who has not won. Out of luck, out of time, time to climb the stairs back up – up where the light breaks your fall, down to Diane's Pool Hall

Elodea 03:46
LYRICS: Elodea All the points of the web, of the star, are in-growing on me, and rooks in pea-coats bury their, their dead, And the weed covers the water, and the weed covers the water - covers me under. And the walk, round the lake, round the place, does nothing for my fear – they can't hear me or my hefty swollen thought, and the words will drag me under, and the words will hold me under – cover up my mouth. What is there on the surface but a brave face? And all the wrongness will surface over time, and the sea will give back its dead, and the ground, spit out its secrets. All the moss, from the tomb, from the stone, is pulling at my heel, with boots of concrete and my heavy, heavy clothes all the weight will pull me under and the weight will keep me under – cover up my cover. What is there on the surface but a brave face? And all the wrongness will surface over time. And the sea, she'll give back her dead, And the ground, he'll spit out his secrets.

LYRICS: Nothing To Say I hear you knocking at me door but you've got nothing to say, you've got nothing to say. Are you coming in? Are you staying out? I'm not bothered either way. I'm not bothered either way. But if you insist, on standing there, letting in all that cold air I'm going to end up, slamming the door shut, slamming the door on your – I see you sitting on my stairs but you've got no way to climb, you've got no way to climb. Are you coming up? Are you going down? I haven't got the time. I have not got the time. And if you insist, on sitting there, getting in my way's not fair – you'll see the door again, from the other side again, outside again, on your own. I find you sleeping on my pillow but you've got nothing to dream, you've got nothing to dream. Are you waking up? Are you going home? This isn't what it seems. This is not what it seems. And if you insist, on staying here, letting out your little fears – you won't be coming near, you won't be coming near, you won't be coming near to me.

Assuming God 02:22
LYRICS: Assuming God When I saw you hanging over, over the shoulder of another girl, didn't make me consider murder – just made me ruler of the world. And do you have a strong resolve? Are you ready for what you won't receive? You'll create your own demise – and there'll be no need for me to intervene. You're born alone – red, washed and screaming, You die alone – you can't speak. I had higher things on my mind. The sound can hold you down at times, can even hold you down to lie. Time goes by without event, and you see no point to try. But if you want to feel close to death or Jesus, the best sound is – When I saw you hanging over, over the shoulder of another girl, didn't make me consider murder – just made me ruler of the world.

LYRICS: You Got Me/High Fee You got me for the violet hour, got me for the velvet hour, got me leaning from a block-brick tower, babe, by the morning my love turns sour. You got me. Stranger's faces never age, I'd rather have youth than a decent wage, your job's got me rotting in a souped-up cage, your job's got me winging my way to an early grave.. with your high fee… attention to detail, attention to detail, your attention never fails, but honey your wheels are coming off the rails. You got me. You're seething, I see you there, just teething, turning into air, stop breathing, boy it isn't fair – your business's got no business to care.

She Rose 04:02
LYRICS: She Rose She rose out of me, yes she rose. Yes, she rose out of the sea, yes she rose. She divided the sea like Moses, and she took the words right out of me and she spoke them. She wrote me a letter, won't you read it? Yes she wrote me a letter, there's a seed in it. Yes she planted a seed and it grows when I read and I won't get to sleep 'til I reap it. And we both felt fate dealt an uneasy hand of cards, and we both had ways to cheat the dealer, and with both our hands on heavy hearts we went our way, but we knew we'd meet again in Winter. All hands on deck. And we watched our wives waiting daily for the rain, and we watched our patient neighbours pining, and we heard her wailing from the back three times a week, and we knew her helpless husband drowning. Behold the ghost of her, The ghost of Mary! And I found myself wading in up to my knees, I went searching for the blackened pearl, and the harbour arbours all her bones and all her sins and the tide brings flotsam in the morning. The ghost of Mary!

LYRICS: Vertigo Of Love They say that you go for girls who look a little like yourself. But you don't strike me as Narcissus, you don't strike me as yourself. And what you seek is nowhere – you grip what slips away. Love is a bed for the lazy, it's the death of me. You saw your reflection in a passing train, And I saw my reflection and it looked the same. Your beauty can't be held in the eyes of someone else. So your love will be in mirrors – you'll be faithful to yourself. What you seek is nowhere, you grip what slips away. Love is a bed for the lazy, it's the death of me. You've got me caught right in a tailspin, a vertigo of love
